VALLEYS & VINEYARDS

Select Valley

Aconcagua Costa Valley

The grapes thrive under the influence of the sea, as cool Pacific breezes allow the vines to develop a unique elegance and character. This valley is ideally suited to cool-climate varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Chiloé

Montes Wines embarked on an ambitious project on Mechuque Island, in Chiloé, pushing the boundaries of viticulture. Just 40 metres from the sea, over 5,000 vines of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were planted to capitalise on the unique climate and exceptional soils. By employing innovative techniques, such as scattering shells to reflect heat and installing protective netting, they’ve adapted the vines to their surroundings while always respecting the local ecosystem. This venture embodies the winery’s visionary spirit and its commitment to sustainability and local development.

Colchagua

Colchagua is one of Chile’s most prestigious wine regions, where Montes Wines was a pioneer in establishing its vineyards. Situated in the country’s central region, it comprises vineyards in Apalta and Marchigüe, two exceptional terroirs. Apalta’s gentle sun exposure allows for a slow, complete ripening of the grapes, while in Marchigüe, close to the Pacific Ocean, red grapes mature under the influence of cooler temperatures.

Curicó

The vineyard for this wine is situated in the mountains of the Curicó Valley at 700 metres above sea level, on metamorphic soils with a pronounced influence of native sclerophyll forest in its aromatic profile. It enjoys excellent water retention year-round, allowing for minimal irrigation. The vines ripen steadily and uniformly, consistently meeting the highest quality standards.

Itata

The Itata Valley, located in the Bío Bío Region, 500 km south of Santiago, is a Chilean appellation renowned for its natural beauty and picturesque hillside vineyards. Bordered by the Ñuble and Itata rivers, it stands out for producing varieties such as Muscat of Alexandria, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, País, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cinsault. With over 500 years of history, the name Itata originates from the Mapuche language and means "abundant grazing."

Valle del Maipo

Alto Maipo is a vineyard situated on the foothills of the Andes Mountains, approximately 460 metres above sea level, on the southern bank of the Maipo River. The vineyard rests on an alluvial terrace formed by sediments carried by the Maipo River over millions of years. The soils are low in fertility and offer excellent drainage due to the presence of alluvial stones combined with clay, silt, and sand. This allows for the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon vines with controlled vigour, resulting in a wine of subtle elegance and refinement.

ZAPALLAR

Just 11 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean and situated at the northern edge of the Aconcagua Costa wine region, Montes Wines is the only winery with vines planted in this new D.O. Renowned for summers that begin with cool, mist-shrouded mornings, give way to bright midday sun, then return to overcast skies and cooler afternoons, the area’s climate favours slow grape ripening, resulting in wines of exceptional complexity and powerful aromas.

LEYDA

Situated within 15 km from the Pacific Ocean, this area enjoys cloudy, wind-swept summers and warm afternoons. Its terroirs are ideal for Sauvignon Blanc, allowing the grapes to develop distinctive aromas and a vibrant mouthfeel, with outstanding acidity and a long, (lingering) finish.

Aconcagua Costa Valley

Although it lies further inland (23 km from the Pacific Ocean), this area is characterised by a cool climate even in summer, with numerous overcast days and a fresh breeze for much of the day. The valley produces crisp white wines with pronounced acidity. Its Chardonnays reveal very distinctive aromas, while the Pinot Noirs are fruity and fresh, with softer tannins and a long, smooth finish on the palate.

APALTA

The unique characteristics and location of the Apalta sub-valley—nestled between the Tinguiririca River and the Apalta hills—provide gentle sun exposure, facilitating the grapes’ slow and complete maturation. Its varied topography includes gravelly soils studded with rounded river stones and zones of mountain scree, with depths that change according to elevation.

MARCHIGÜE

In the Colchagua Valley, between the Coastal Mountain Range and the sea, our Marchigüe vineyards lie within gently undulating terrain that reaches the Pacific Ocean some 25 kilometres away. Here, our red grapes ripen slowly under the influence of slightly cooler temperatures. The topography is considerably flatter than at Apalta, characterised by low-sloping hills. The soils are shallow, often no more than 60 centimetres deep, with moderate clay content and a high capacity for water retention.
